Celebrating the History of Geraldton

As a member of the Geraldton Heights Estate property team, I know that we have told you a lot about the city of Geraldton as it exists now. What you may not know is that the city as a whole has a rich history tempered by a culture developed since its foundation.

Aussie Soldiers
The heritage of our ancestors in Geraldton stands proudly in the many attractions and museums that reside within the city. History buffs will enjoy many opportunities to learn all about Geraldton’s rich past.

One of the most notable is the Western Australia Museum, which is located in Geraldton. While not exclusive to the city, it tells of the maritime history of its coast and even has shipwrecks from early explorers. The Batavia Longboat Replica is located nearby and also tells of the sea’s influence on the city and how ships used to be.

The Victoria District Hospital is no longer in use for serving the infirm, but it does give a glimpse into how it was operated during the Victorian era. A building rich in history, it and the nearby Bill Sewell Complex give interesting insights to this time period.

If the early colonial settlement is what really interests you, the Central Greenough Historic Settlement features a re-enacted town built using the old buildings from the original Geraldton settlements. This collection of buildings shows what it was like during this agricultural time.

The Chapman Valley Historical Society Museum also focuses on the lives of early settlers during that colonial time.

The Greenough Museum is similar, but focuses on the specific home of John Maley, the so-called “King of the Greenough Flats”. This gives insight to the life of the time, but from the point of view of one of its most prominent citizens.

The Oakabella Homestead does this, too, but has more agriculture attached to its history. Still, both give great visions to the past. A slightly more modern building, Queens Park Theatre is a historic venue for plays, conventions and weddings. This is still used today for these purposes and more.

It would take too long to explain all of the city’s history; it’s something that you have to experience for yourself.
